Too Much All at Once: A Constant Buzz Under Everything began with a typed letter placed in the letterboxes of the entire street. The writer described a persistent sound and called on neighbours to listen, recognise it and respond together.
I listened, but I could not hear what they heard.
Rather than judging or dismissing the experience, I began looking for another form of resonance. The work brings together fragments of previous moving-image works, layering moments that were never intended to coexist. Images interrupt, repeat and compete with one another, creating a sense of disorder within an otherwise serene space.
The title is taken directly from the letter. It describes not only the sound the writer was trying to communicate, but the strain of attempting to make an internal experience understood by others. The sound remained unavailable to me, but the urgency, isolation and need to be believed did not.
I listened and heard nothing. The work became the noise I could not hear.
